Objective:
Replace old Solid Fuel AGA with an efficient electric combi boiler
The Customer:
Mr Bird has lived in his 3-bed bungalow since 1989, throughout this time he has relied on his 31-year-old Rayburn AGA to supply him with heating & hotwater. Unfortunately, due to ill health & spiralling coal prices the 66-year-old has struggled to maintain his solid fuel system & keep his home warm.
Mr Bird approached Leicester City Council and was put in touch with the Local Authority’s boiler scheme. Mr Bird was able to access grants which provided partial funding towards the installation of an Energy Efficient Electric Combination Boiler and full wet central heating system.
The Solution:
Working in partnership with Leicester City Council UK Gas Services designed a new electric heating system with the aim of reducing running costs and to remove the necessity for Mr Bird to make up and maintain a fire daily.
Key Points:
- Existing solid fuel AGA was over 30 years old & inefficient
- Mr Birds coal bunker was over 10m away from his AGA
- Running cost of over £270 every 4 to 6 weeks during winter
- The appliance wasn’t serviced & Mr Bird would sweep it annually
- Mr Bird would still use his open fire in the lounge & electric fan heaters during the winter to keep warm
Installation
UK Gas Services installed a floor standing Heatrae Sadia Electromax electric combination boiler, seven new radiators, all new heating pipework, dedicated mains cold water supply & new fuseboard in just two days.
The boiler came with a manufacturer backed 10 Year on-site parts and labour warranty on the cylinder, with two years on the boiler and controls.
The Electromax is designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK.

“The existing system was old & needed replacing years ago. Life is easier now I’m not having to clear ashes & light fires every day, I’m not getting any younger. I’m not planning on moving, I am happy here and want to stay put. The electric boiler is modern, efficient and less hassle. It was a bigger job than expected, but the installers did a great job, they explained everything & they have some real panache. I’m very happy so far”
